We have this darling, little shelf area tucked away in our kitchen. When we first moved in, I couldn’t wait to decorate it. It was the first completed space in the house. I simply love styling shelves. Here are my simple, yet effective, rules for shelf styling.
Rule no. 1 – Play with highs and lows to keep the eye moving.
Be sure to rotate items according to height. I like to use old books to make this even more drastic. On the top shelf, my two larger white items are the same height. Adding a simple book underneath creates more dramatic eye movement thus, making it more visually appealing.
Rule no. 2 – Keep colors minimal and play with texture instead.
I have versions of white, copper, and sage tones on our shelves. However, I have introduced multiple textures within that color palette.
Rule no. 3 – Mix old with new
I think its a mistake to use only new or only old items. When using only old items, it doesn’t feel fresh enough. When using only new items, it feels too sterile. When you mix old and new items, you end up with the perfect balance to achieve a curated yet clean look.
Rule no. 4 – Make sure the backdrop is a different color.
If I had white walls with white decor, they would get lost. Even though the shade of grey is very subtle, its still enough to let the white items pop. Keep your wall color in mind when choosing your color palette for decor.
