There’s something inherently calming about the glow of a candle—especially one you’ve made with your own two hands. Whether you’re looking to create a cozy atmosphere, give a heartfelt handmade gift, or reduce toxins in your home, DIY candles are a beautiful way to bring warmth and intention into your space.
Here’s everything you need to get started.
Why Make Your Own Candles?
Store-bought candles often contain synthetic fragrances and paraffin wax, which can emit harmful chemicals when burned. Making your own gives you full control over the ingredients—plus it allows you to personalize the scent, color, and container to suit your home.
What You’ll Need:
- Wax: Soy, beeswax, or coconut wax are great natural options
- Wicks: Choose a size based on your container width
- Containers: Glass jars, ceramic cups, or recycled tins
- Fragrance oils or essential oils: Customize your scent
- Double boiler or wax melting pitcher
- Wooden sticks or wick holders to center the wick
- Thermometer (optional, but helpful)
Step-by-Step: How to Make Candles
1. Prepare Your Containers
Clean and dry your containers. Use a dab of melted wax or a wick sticker to secure the wick at the center of each jar.
2. Melt the Wax
In a double boiler, melt your wax slowly over medium heat. Stir occasionally and watch the temperature—ideal pouring temps are usually between 120–140°F, depending on your wax.
3. Add Fragrance
Once the wax is fully melted, remove from heat and stir in your chosen oils. A good starting point is 1 oz of fragrance oil per pound of wax.
4. Pour and Set
Carefully pour the wax into your containers, keeping the wick upright. Use a chopstick or wick holder to keep it centered. Let them sit undisturbed for several hours or overnight.
5. Trim the Wick
Once fully set, trim the wick to about ¼ inch before burning.
