To honor the last day of July, I wanted to make another flag dessert, because nothing says “summer celebration” quite like a festive cake that’s as eye-catching as it is delicious. This American Flag Cake is a classic—light, fresh, and full of fruit. Whether you’re celebrating the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, or simply want something festive for your next backyard barbecue, this cake is always a hit.
It starts with a soft vanilla sheet cake, gets topped with whipped cream, and is finished with rows of strawberries and blueberries arranged like the stars and stripes. It’s simple to make but feels like a showstopper on the table.
🎂 American Flag Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Cake:
- 1 box vanilla cake mix (or your favorite homemade vanilla sheet cake recipe)
- Ingredients listed on box (typically eggs, oil, water)
For the Topping:
- 1 pint fresh strawberries, sliced
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional:
- Store-bought whipped topping for convenience
- Star-shaped piping tip (for decorating)
Instructions:
1. Bake the Cake:
Prepare and bake the vanilla cake according to the box or your homemade recipe in a 9×13-inch baking dish. Let it cool completely before decorating.
2. Make the Whipped Cream:
In a chilled mixing bowl, beat the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
3. Decorate the Flag:
- Spread an even layer of whipped cream over the entire cooled cake.
- In the upper left corner, arrange blueberries in a square to mimic the stars.
- Use a piping bag with a star tip to add little whipped cream stars among the blueberries (optional but festive!).
- Layer sliced strawberries in rows to create red stripes across the rest of the cake.
4. Chill & Serve:
Refrigerate the cake until ready to serve. It’s best served cold and can be made a few hours in advance.
Tips for Success:
- Want to make it even easier? Use store-bought whipped topping or a pound cake base.
- Use a toothpick to outline where the blueberry square will go before you begin decorating.
- Get the kids involved in decorating—it’s a great hands-on holiday activity!
